Changing your skincare routine should help your skin, right? So why are you suddenly breaking out?
Don’t panic—this is more common than you think, and it doesn’t always mean the products are “bad.” Here’s what could be going on, and how to tell if it’s normal or a sign to switch things up.
π§Ό 1. Is It Skin Purging or a Reaction?
Skin purging is a temporary increase in breakouts when active ingredients (like acids or retinol) speed up cell turnover. It often means the product is working—bringing clogged pores to the surface faster.
A reaction, on the other hand, feels inflamed, itchy, or sore and may include rash-like bumps. That’s your skin saying “nope.”
π’ Purging usually clears up in 2–4 weeks.
π΄ A reaction may get worse the more you use the product.
π 2. New Ingredients = Adjustment Time
Your skin needs time to adapt. Like any big change, it can get a little worse before it gets better—especially if you’ve been over-washing or stripping your skin in the past.
Be gentle. Use less product. Give it time to settle.
⛔ 3. Overdoing It? Too Many Products at Once
Jumping into a whole new routine with 4–5 products can overwhelm your skin.
✨ Tip: Introduce one product at a time every few days. That way, if something doesn’t agree with your skin, it’s easier to spot the culprit.

π‘ Final Thought:
Listen to your skin—it’s trying to talk to you. Breaking out after switching products doesn’t always mean they’re wrong for you. Sometimes, it’s just part of the journey to clearer, balanced skin.
